The Language of Poetry

Achieving Vitality in Language

The five special concerns to poets.

First for phrasing that will catch your readers' attention. Give them a fresh isight. Remember readers are tired of the utilitarian prose in newspapers, magazines, and textbooks. Give them something interesting in every line. Nothing sensational just a new metaphor or original phrase.

Second find nouns that are solid, specific, and visual. Avoid talking about life and mortality and women for a subject.Look at every adjective in your first draft and try to select a different noun.

Third try finding verbs that are specific. The right verb rarely needs to be modified. Example birds that fly suddenly are not as memorable as those that scatter.

Fourth use the language of your own age. There is no such thing as poetic language there is only language that is appropriate for a particular poem.

Last compress, compress, compress. Sometimes you find poems that are wordy in print, and sometimes you will find poems that read like prose in short lines. So try to leave out those do-nothing phrases and lines. What is left will have impact and vitality.

The Cliche

is an expression that was once fresh enouhg to cretae a clear picture in the readers mind but has now lost its vitality through constant use. a cliche can be used to explain further more everyday life situations in and out a persons life. A cliche can use one way as an comparison that forces the reader to hear, smell, see etc. Cliches can sometimes drop the comparison and deal with the subject directly. Finally, one can twist the cliche around so that it is reborn in some slightly altered form. ag ood way to improve your skill in dealing with cliche's is to apply these techniques to mother nature" styrong as an ox" or "wise as an owl", and "Where there's smoke, there's fire.

Levels of Usage

Our diction is to be precise when phrasing more formal than it will be ten minutes later when we are chatting with our peers. This is just basically saying what type of language that meeta the occasion. the task of a poet comes from find the rif=ght usage of lanuage in the poem. these questions may appear:who is speaking his poem? who is the audience? what is the tone or the feeling? but usually the answer is found when the use of the language is read or heard or told. when we listen we can tell whether theres a narrative poem( such as Once upon a time....)

WHatever is most important and appropriate of the level of the tones and language is that which is appropriate to poem and persona.
