Symbolism - the use of symbols to represent or refer to something. In basic terminology, all language is symbolic. In condensed thinking, symbolism is the use of different items with particular conventional meanings.
Three Genres
Symbols – add density of meaning to a poem but it functions as the opposite as figures of speech.
-On the other hand, use an image that exist as a part of the poem and adds to it a greater range of meanings.
-Public – symbols that are widely recognized & are almost a part of the language.
-Private – meaning is made clear through the context of the poem.

Three Generes
Images of Sound, Touch, Smell, and Taste
-So closely associated w/ similes and metaphors, it is sometimes used interchangeably w/ these terms
(Frog jump from the messy rock)
-Used in conjunction w/ one another and w/ visual details. They all interact with each other,these senses give more of a feel to the poem, then just image of what’s being seen.
Examples of Sound and Touch
:Or to feel the "springy pine-floor" whereyou walk
:What was it,it "whispered?" I know not well myself;
